Ik kocht The Cloisters een aantal maanden geleden omdat het boek me heel tof leek, maar ook omdat ik de vormgeving van het boek gewoonweg prachtig vond. Een week later hoorde ik dat er ook een vertaling was. Oeps. Nadat ik Duivelsvlucht las had ik zin in nog meer dark academia, dus besloot ik dit boek eindelijk eens op te pakken.

The Cloisters was anders dan ik had verwacht, maar eigenlijk ben ik op een positieve manier verrast. Ik heb me namelijk erg vermaakt met het lezen. Ik vond de hoofdpersoon interessant, de toxic vriendschap was goed uitgewerkt en het moordmysterie was niet perse een mysterie, wel meeslepend.

Voor mij was de dader vanaf de gebeurtenis overduidelijk en bood het verhaal op dat vlak niet perse iets verrassends. Toch vond ik dat niet storend, omdat ik de onderlinge relatie tussen de personages (en het decor van tarotkaarten) erg interessant vond.

En hoewel ik zeg dat ik Ann interessant vond, waren er wel een paar punten die ik minder vond. Zo vond ik haar weinig emotie tonen met betrekking tot wat haar overkomt en vond ik haar qua persoonlijkheid weinig groeien.

Waarom heb ik dan toch zoveel van The Cloisters genoten? Het gaat over (kunst)geschiedenis en tarot en daar ben ik sowieso een grote sucker voor. Daarnaast vond ik de setting van het museum, de mysteries van de Renaissance en de link met oude Universiteiten erg tot de verbeelding spreken.

Ik werd gewoon erg blij van dit boek. De recensies op Goodreads zijn behoorlijk kritisch, maar ik heb juist enorm genoten van de setting en de verhaallijn. Tijdens het lezen waande ik me in de gangen van het museum.
