The forest of moon and sword stond al bijna een jaar ongelezen in mijn kast. Vaak pak je toch je nieuwste boeken – ik wel tenminste – en daar wilde ik wat meer balans in vinden. En ik ben blij dat ik het boek heb opgepakt, want het is een leuke, avontuurlijke middle grade.

Elke keer ben ik weer een beetje verbaasd hoeveel diepgang er in een middle grade kan zitten. Misschien is het omdat het vaak over andere thema’s gaat en er geen ruimte is voor tienerdrama. In dit geval is Art haar moeder kwijt, omdat zij is gearresteerd wegens hekserij. Art gaat haar moeder zoeken en beleefd op haar tocht vele avonturen.

Ik vond The forest of moon and sword heel mooi uitgewerkt. Nou hielp het ook wel dat het boek illustraties had. Hierdoor voelde het extra sferisch.

De schrijfstijl lag in mijn straatje, evenals de illustraties en de locatie waarin het boek zich afspeelt (Schotland). Ik vond de personages leuk en heb genoten van Art’s avontuur.

Was het heel memorabel? Nee, dat ook niet. Het was avontuurlijk en had een bepaalde voorspelbaarheid. Hierdoor las het boek fijn weg, maar het was geen boek vol verrassingen. Vooral een mooi avontuurlijk verhaal geschikt voor jong en oud.
