Cassandra Clare die een niet-Shadowhunterboek gaat uitgeven?! Dat gaat wat worden! Net als veel andere populaire YA auteurs (Leigh Bardugo, Holly Black, VE Schwab) waagt ook Cassandra Clare een poging om het volwassen publiek in haar hart te sluiten. Dat snap ik wel, want haar geliefde Shadowhunters bestaan al best lang en de lezers van vroeger zijn nu volwassen.
In Sword catcher verwachtte ik dan ook een toffe fantasy vol drama en intriges terug te vinden.
Maar dat kreeg ik niet echt.
Nu weet ik dat zij best lange hoofdstukken kan schrijven, maar na een proloog van 37 pagina’s en een bijna even lang eerste hoofdstuk, stapte ik – nadat ik hoofdstuk 2 drie keer opnieuw was begonnen omdat mijn focus ongeveer op Mars lag – over op het luisterboek. En ook dat bleek – helaas – een flinke kluif. Ik durf bijna te zeggen dat ik was gestopt als ik hem niet perse voor de leesclub had uit willen lezen.
En dat is natuurlijk niet zo best.
Het is geen slecht boek, geloof me, maar het is niet míjn boek.
Voor mij was de basis, de fundering, van het boek te standaard fantasy. Ik had hoge verwachtingen, want de wereld die Clare heeft geschapen zit echt heel tof in elkaar. Echter was er voor mij teveel infodump en voelde ik te weinig voor de personages. Het voelde als een kleed waarbij teveel touwtjes los zaten, want er zaten een aantal elementen in die ik erg tof vond, maar waar vervolgens weinig of zelfs niks mee werd gedaan. Zo jammer!
De plus van het boek was voor mij de worldbuilding. Dit is een soort alternatieve middeleeuwse wereld, vol met culturen die duidelijk gebaseerd zijn op bestaande culturen. Zo was het voor mij heel duidelijk dat Lin behoord tot de Joodse gemeenschap, zij het dat het een andere naam had.
Ik had gewoon graag meer gezien. Meer gevoel. Graag meer intriges gehad waarbij ik echt wat zou voelen. Bij de Shadowhunter boeken raak ik altijd invested, maar hier lukte het me niet. En dat terwijl er best intense dingen gebeuren.
Het hoogtepunt was voor mij het einde, waarbij we bij beide hoofdpersonages een scene krijgen die grootse dingen beloofd voor het vervolg. Voor mij was dit echter te laat. Ik heb geen zin om 600 pagina’s (23 uur, al luisterde ik hem versneld in 13 uur) te moeten worstelen door een soort inleiding.
Voor mij heeft Clare het met Sword catcher helaas niet waargemaakt. Ik had hoge verwachtingen door haar andere werk en voor mij wist ze dit niet waar te maken. Het was teveel detail, te weinig intriges. Daar baal ik echt van!
