Toen ik The Hedgewitch of Foxhall ergens vorig jaar bestelde, was dat voornamelijk vanwege de mooie kaft en het feit dat het over heksen ging. Ik had al eerder iets van Anna Bright gelezen – al kwam ik daar pas tijdens het lezen zelf achter. Onlangs ben ik eens goed door mijn TBR planken gegaan en heb ik boeken verschoven: welke wilde ik nou eindelijk eens lezen? Dit was er een van!
Wat ik tof vond aan dit boek was dat het zich afspeelde in Wales en dat het vol magische elementen zat, terwijl het historische fantasy gevoel bleef hangen. Dit vond ik erg overtuigend gedaan. Toch merk ik dat er achteraf maar weinig écht is blijven hangen van het boek. Oprecht, de kaft is prachtig en de sfeer is mooi, maar het is voor mij geen boek wat blijvende indruk op me heeft gemaakt. Ik heb me tijdens het lezen gewoon vermaakt en dat is soms voldoende.
Zit er romance in? Ja. Maar het is wel echt young adult, dus verwacht geen steamy momenten tussen de hoofdpersonen. Wat overigens niets afdoet aan de chemie tussen de personages. Het vleugje liefdesdriehoek werkte in dit geval ook best goed, moet ik zeggen.
Ben je op zoek naar een fijne historische fantasy zonder dat je wordt neergeknuppeld met historische feiten? Wil je romantiek maar zonder spice? Dan is The Hedgewitch of Foxhall wellicht iets voor jou!
