Soms staan boeken echt schandalig lang ongelezen in je kast, terwijl je er wel heel enthousiast over was toen je het boek kocht. A lesson in Vengeance was zo’n boek. Het is dat ik met mezelf had afgesproken me de komende tijd vooral op die boeken te richten, omdat ik ze anders nooit meer lees. En dit boek klonk echt interessant genoeg om wel ooit gelezen te hebben.
Het gaat over een meisje wiens vriendin is overleden en ze begint weer op een vrij exclusieve kostschool, waar vroeger heksen schijnen te hebben gezeten. En dan ontmoet ze een nieuwe leerling. Het is sapphic en het is dark academia.
Maar wat het nog meer is, weet ik niet zo goed? Een soort psychologische thriller?
Ik vond Felicity en Ellen niet perse de meest sympathieke hoofdpersonen en hoewel ik sommige elementen heel interessant vond, is het niet dat alles daadwerkelijk een functie had voor het boek. Zo vond ik het idee van de coven heel tof, maar uiteindelijk is het bijzaak. En dat frustreerde me. Ik vond het mooi geschreven en onderhuids deed het wel wat, maar het stoorde me wel dat het boek zo voort bleef kabbelen. Hierdoor zag ik het einde ook echt van ver aankomen.
Wat ik dus van het boek vond, weet ik eigenlijk niet zo goed. Het was mooi, het had iets interessant, maar ergens boeide A lesson in Vengeance me ook niet voldoende om helemaal meegetrokken te worden. Dit komt mede vanwege de vage persoonlijkheid van Felicity.
